In about two months' time, I'm going to be abandoning my landline and making a complete switch to VOIP.

I'd like to know what experience you've had, if any, with two German VOIP providers: sipNetworks and the more well-known sipgate.

Some cursory Google searches seem to indicate that sipNetworks' quality of service is better, but their features (emergency numbers, landline phone number transfer) are more or less the same.

More generally, is there anything I should pay particular attention to?

There is an ever expanding number of Voip Providers all of them offer a slightly different mix of facilities and may or may not provide good customer service (if that is important to you).

You don't go deeply into your requirements but my best suggestion would be to sign up with a provider in the area that you make the most calls 'To' and not necessarily with an entity in your geographic location unless those two places are one and the same.

My requirements aren't really extensive, I was just looking for recommendations for or against these two providers.

Geography is kind of important in this case, since I want to retain my existing German landline phone number, and only German VOIP providers seem to offer that option.

unless my limited german language skills fooled me it appears that both operators offer completely free of charge accounts(except for per minute call termination) options. my suggestion if quality is a concern would be to sign up for free accounts from both operators. put a small credit on each and make some calls and compare them for yourself. after using both for a couple weeks you could pick one to port your PSTN number over too and maybe sign up for a inclusive monthly package deal if it would benefit you. if you just stay on pay as you go than you may find you want keep both services active.

spg

p.s. i completely free service that lets you register multiple SIP services to one device/ATA is found at sip.mysipswitch.com. you could set up both providers for both inbound and outbound calls on one device. similar services are offered in both free and paid versions from voxalot(voxalot.com) and pbxes(pbxes.org)
