I own an ipod touch. and there is an application that allows you to set up a sip provider, and make calls through them on wifi.
I dont want to pay for a sip provider, and a mainly only make calls from my home.
What i need to know is, is there a way to set up a sip server on a computer, or just an addon box, that attatches to the land-line. So i could make calls through my landline on my iphone. But i would need like a sip server info to put in.
I hope you understand what i am trying to say.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Voipuser.

You should start by telling us about your Wifi.... is it coming from your router or from some other source. Perhaps your router includes Wifi. What you are asking can be done but it is best to know what network equipment you already have. You might be interested in these postings.

The wifi is from my router. i have full controll of it. The router includes wifi.

In the posting link you provided, i did not find much usefull. We may be thinking different things.

Basically, i would like to set up my own sip server on a pc, to connect to through my itouch. The pc would be connected to the landline via a modem card. So i do not actually need a sip provider, i am more looking for a way to use my itouch over land line, but through home sip service.

Sorry for any trouble. thanks for your help.

you can do what you want. but you can not do it using your modem card on your PC you need to have an FXO card/port that is designed exactly for the function you want. you would than be able to set up some kind of simple sip server software on the PC and connect the ipod to that. i do not have any experience setting this up but i do believe that some ATA's can be configured with as FXO ports/adapters.

You could do what you describe by setting up an Asterisk box but you will need and FXO connection. There were some modem cards that could be converted to FXO cards and that is really what this card
is...

There is little chance that you computer would have one as most of the ones that come with computers are soft modems.
However, this would all seem a bit excessive to connect the iTouch as the computer would have to be running all the time (consuming lots of power) for it to work.

A better bet might be to buy an ATA box such as the Linksy SPA 3102 that will give you a FXO port and a FXS port. Then the PSTN line connects to the FXO port and you can connect a phone to the FXS port. The box connects to the internet. Now, with the iTouch wireless you can call you the ATA have it pass the call to PSTN and incoming PSTN can be passed via wifi to the itouch. A computer does not then come into the equation.

One problem, I suspect that the software available for the iTouch at present may be a little basic and may have problems reaching the ATA.

I think I know what he is trying to ask. I know this is an old thread but hopefully it will get a response. For example if I have the SPA3102 connected to my landline and internet at home, would I be able to connect to the SPA3102 from another location via voip and the SPA3102 call using the landline?

Hi Lildaver and welcome to Voipuser

Yes it can be done but it begs the question 'why would you want to'? As a practical and even a theoretical excercise in learning about connecting VOIP devices its quite useful, assuming your time costs $0 per hour and you have an equipment budget of between 50 and 100 $ you will get something working - BUT you can buy a lot of calls with that and the savings you are going to make from such a set up are minimal.

There are some threads in the forum relating to setting up two Sipura 3000 devices (older models but all set-up info is the same). A forum search will throw those up

Before you go too much further I would have a good think about what you want to achieve and then read through some more info on this and other similar forums. (Voip-info is a good one as is Voxilla for Sipura devices).

Welcome to the world of Voip !
