According to the 'register' this is the year that VOIP hits the fan

With VoIP rapidly becoming a commodity feature Sipera's VIPER Lab predicts that 2008 will be the year it all goes pear-shaped

Scaremongering? Probably, IMHO the major Telco's in their haste to empbrace VOIP, haven't thought out their strategies to deploying it with regard to security, or rather the implications.

Scarmongering definitely. Selling products on 'fear' is a well proven technique in many fields especially security.

So if someone listens in to me chatting to Auntie Mable or hacks my password (because I was too stupid to use more than four characters) and uses up the balance of my ten euros credit with my chosen VOISP then is that really anything other than a personal security issue?

In the same way anyone daft enough to give their credit card info out over the phone to a complete stranger is not a candidate for any kind of solution that could be provided by a VOIP hardware manufacturer.

Interesting conversational topic but no real substance - is there ?

We saw a lot of legislation drafted in 07 which requires ITSP's to provide more security and control over communications streams, so I definitely think voip security will be higher on the agenda this year. I dont think it will be voip's 'Achilles heel' tho
