I think you need to try to adjust the sound levels to minimize the noise. Many ATAs have this problem more or less. It will be difficult to get the sound as good as the PSTN audio without the ATA box. I think the GS386 mentioned above works OK because it uses a relay to switch to pstn rather than translation PSTN to VOIP to PSTN as it would on a power failure. The Fritz is a much more powerful device.
