Hi All,

I'm currently doing the rounds of VOIP providers again as I need to cut the cost of calls to mobiles (particualrly my own mobile on call divert)

reading through the MOUNTAIN of information Out there I came across the category of "UK [Personal]"

Am I correct in assuming that this is an 07000 number than can be routed to any fixed / mobile number, but at a premium rate?

not that I want one, just want to ensure I avoid calling one Wink

Regards

Yep thats correct.

For diverting to mobiles, have you looked at voipjet ?

being US based you can set the cli to the caller you are diverting

you may want to ask the VOIP operators specifically if they charge the same rates(or even allow) rates call forwarding. quite a few of the least expensive providers(such as many of the betamax providers) charge higher rates for call diverts than regular calls or they may even consider it 'fair use violation' and not allow it at all. this is usually only with the cheapest providers; often the ones that include free minutes to landlines, etc. of course depending exactly how you set up the call forwarding it may not look like call forwarding to the operators. it is usually forwarding through hosted PBX's(services like mysipswitch, PBXes, euteliavoip, etc.) that trigger the 'FUP.'

Thanks for the advice Gents.

I hadnt seen voipjet, the rates are competetive and an IAX based solution is infintiely preferable to SIP from my perspective. Too much NAT in the world!

However, in the bigger picture I want free UK landline calls as well which, although cheap (assuming voipjets rates are in USD) they didnt seem to offer on first glance.

What I want to do is find a provider which will allow me free uk fixed calls, plus use my (T-mobile) mobile phone cheaply as a virtual extension on *. Since I would be originating the diverted (re-routed sounds better!) call from my * box what would tell "them" that the call was diverted ? particularly if I, optionally, answer the call first then use an attendant to "press 1 to try Robs Mobile, or 2 for answerphone"

The drivers here are my phone bill (circa UKP 90/Quarter) and the need to route calls rapidly from my old mum via a dect-to-wifi "hotline" to wherever I am, in an emergency.

So far VOIPcheap.com seem to be coming out on top (although SIP based) which ties up with what I read independantly on moneysavingexpert.com - but theres probably a catch I havent found yet ?

Opinions folks ?

Regards

There probably is nothing to tell them that the call is diverted. but again a bunch of the discount providers consider any traffic coming from asterisk to be 'wholesale' and therefore not eligible for the promo deal. some example are voicestick in the US and some(but not all) of the betamax providers.

Sounds like what you want is a mobile phone premier cell and a shared minutes service

Since we are mentioning names.... Although I am not using them at present, one of the better carriers that I have tried was mywebcalls. They time by the second, don't expire funds and have been around for a long time. The rates for the UK and the US are pretty good (quoted in US $ by default). They don't seem tohave the strange restrictions that exist with some other providers.

bigbloke,

have you considered a GSM gateway and a SIM card with unlimited or cheap in network calling. i do not know much of the technical details my self but this may be the best option longterm to get SIP calls forwarded to your mobile. i do not know about the UK but i known in many other European countries such as germany there are very good deals on SIM cards for unlimited calls to phones in the same network.
