As the subject!

I'm in the market for a new ADSL router with built-in analogue phone ports for SIP. I'm mainly looking at some of the "higher end" devices like the draytek 2600V.

But, for half the price, the Speedtouch 716g appears to have much the same features -- including the voice ports. In fact the 716 appears to have both FXO & FXS ports.

Does anyone have any experience of the Speedtouch 716g's voip capabilities?

Hi jpdw

I posted this a few weeks back, its already out of date but still interesting - I bought the newer Intertex IX67 as a direct result and I can honesly say its the most amazing piece of VOIP equipment I ever worked with.

I've been trying out the SpeedTouch 716g for three weeks now, and I have the following problems:

1. I often fail to get an outgoing ring tone, even though I know the remote phone is ringing (eg: when I ring myself for testing!).

2. On a number of occasions when a call has not successfully connected, the VoIP capability has hung completely, including the PSTN fallback. Only way out is to reboot the modem.

3. The modem refuses to connect to the 1899.com VoIP service, despite the account working fine from a Softphone.

4. While using PSTN fallback for an outgoing call, the modem stops responding over ethernet/wireless. Communication is restored only on hang up.

5. Thomson support is non-existent. Either they're not interested, not capable of supporting VoIP (they keep asking questions about computer operating systems and driver versions - hardly relevant to analogue phone use), or they're getting so many support calls that they can't cope.

6. It is only possible to configure a single SIP provider. No way of having different providers for out/incoming or different prefixes/time of day.

7. The BT socket adapters provided with the modem are not suitable for standard BT phones as they don't support the ring circuit.

The modem is acceptable for general broadband use, but I would definitely not recommend it for VoIP, at least with the current firmware.

If you want to do it properly, easily and allow you to move on to hard phones (Cisco 79xx, Mitel 50xx, Avaya 4062, Pingtel etc) and soft SIP phones (Windows Messenger, SIPPS, xlite, Snom ect) then you’ll need an IX66/67.

The Draytek V2600V and Speedtouch 716g are ok if you want to connect traditional analogue phones to the FXS port, but no better than a standard (non VoIP) router when it comes to hard and soft SIP phones. You’ll still need to depend on outbound proxys, STUN, NAT Traversal, port forwarding, port opening.

The IX66/67 is a SIP proxy, so you can host your own SIP domain, you can connect any number of SIP devices to ITSP, there is pretty much no configuration to do the above. It is a stateful inspection firewall, optionally a SIP PBX & VPN server.

The most recent firmware appears to have fixed some early issues, and the units are now being supplied with the correct UK phone adapters (so attached phones now ring !!)

There are some fairly positive reviews around, e.g. http://www.itreviews.co.uk/h745-speedto ... review.htm

ADSL2+ support and price would appear to be the main attraction, and of course being able to call friends for free is a small bonus..

Have Fun!

Please could someone do a review of the Speedtouch 716g for the forum? It looks like an interesting 'intro to VOIP' product

Out of the box, browse to the web interface, input my username and password on the displayed page, and instant connection.

Quick visit to voiptalk.org for my SIP account. Copy/Paste SIP user details in to the VoIP page on the SPeedTouch. A re-assuring "click" from the router. Connect up phone with the little adapter, and hey presto: Free phone calls are here!

And sending this over the wireless LAN which was also a doddle. Next just need to check out the Afterburner support....

Not a fancy review...but i guess that'll do for me

I purchased a 716g yesterday and I have a similar problem to some others, namely that I can make outgoing calls on using the voip ports but although I can hear the other party, they cannot hear me.

Also, I cannot receive incoming calls. The service I am using is called VOIPBuster.

I think it may be to do with STUN settings which I cannot see how to set on the 716g.

Any advice greatfully received!

Sinkers, paul123 here from the now defunct voipbuster forum....did you get it going?

If not, try the following (it works on mine):

On Voice tab -
SIP Transport Protocol: UDP
SIP Transport Port: 5060
SIP Registrar Address: IP Address:
Domain Name: stun.voipbuster.com Exclamation
SIP Registrar Port: 5060
SIP Outbound Proxy: IP Address:
Domain Name:
SIP Outbound Proxy Port: 0

Registration Information
Phone: 1
Phone Number: <voipbuster-user-name>
Caller Name: <voipbuster-user-name>
User Name: <voipbuster-user-name>
Password: <voipbuster-password>

On the Codecs tab: 729 (this works fine, as do any of the other settings)

Is your firmware up to date? http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/716.asp

good luck

Is it possible to add certain prefixes to a list (the non free service numbers like 0900xxxx, 0800xxxx) which when called dont use voip but the normal telecom company? (for me its KPN, i live in the netherlands)
when calling locally with voip in combination with voipbuster.com do you have to press the country number first?
does it support the iax protocol?

Hi Spex,

Just back from holiday so sorry for the late reply but I also have VOIPBuster working with exactly the same settings that you have.

Regards

Sinkers

My comments at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Spee ... +716+v5+WL

From my observations so far (please correct this if I'm wrong), if you're really serious about VoIP without a local Asterisk server you would be better off buying a Sipura SPA 2002/3000, accompanied with a Speedtouch 510 (without WLAN) or Speedtouch 580 / 585 (with WLAN). The IPQoS on Speedtouch devices is brilliant, but the lack of proper multiple gateway support and weak dialplans makes it very difficult to justify purchasing a 716.
