Hello VoIP Forum,
I am running a small call center with (30) agents and I am in the process of upgrading the technology. We are going to use Asterisk pbx and thin client terminals. I do not know if I should use softphone or hardphone for VoIP. The doubts are:
1- Is it possible to use softphones with thin-lcient terminals?
2- if so, what is needed for using headset on the thin-client terminal and on terminal server?
3- Is there any important performance consideration?
Please be kind enough to share your experience and recommendations.
Thanks a lot,
ecoelho

Great minds think alike. Something I'm testing at the moment using LTSP.

Thin client/Servers are not at their best handling 'live' media. DSP processing knocks seven bells out the processor and it needs priority over all things, more than a couple of instances and things will start to break up. So I would recommend not trying to run softphones.

Network capacity is also a potential problem. There is a lot of data being shunted around. Given it is only a small network, provided the network is in good condition (i.e. genuine Cat5) there should be no problem.
A larger network may need to look at employing managed switches with QOS and/or Virtual Circuits to prioritise VoIP, or ultimately splitting the network voip/data.
