As of yesterday, the US
Federal Communications Commission had accepted spectrum bids from 96 companies, with a further 170 bids classified as "incomplete". FCC
Auction 73 is to open the airwaves in the 700MHz band (formerly used by terrestrial TV networks), allowing companies to get into the wireless telecommunications business.
Looking down the list the only name that jumps out is
Google Airwaves Inc, with their promised bid for wireless spectrum. The "big 4": Sprint/Nextel, AT&T Wireless etc., are not visibly here, but perhaps a tactic is to make sure your submission is "incomplete" until a later date closer to the auction?
Looking down the list it's clear that many of the companies are highly regional affairs (e.g. Northeast Nebraska Telephone Company, Central Texas Telephone Investments) looking to serve a local customer base. In some rural areas (like upstate New York and Vermont) more competition in the mobile business will definitely be welcome. Some (like Spectrum Acquisitions, and Triad 700) are probably companies that have been specifically formed in order to exploit the 700Mhz auctions.
