Hi, dibsmft
Thank you for the reply--all 3 of them. I am eager to try to connect when I get back home tonight. I am glad they are working. Their web shop appears down all this time (cannot see anything other than minutes--last week I was told i needed to set up a number before I could use the service, and that link just went to the same page. Now that link is gone and there is no word on why. So I assumed the whole service was down. I guessI can call but not BE called until I get a number from them).
By the way, I am amazed at what is out there. And your site is great in that it is not biased toward any one company.
I am a little confused why one would need many providers (for example, I have Gizmo and now Babble). But my phone can take two numbers--glad to hear only one STUN is needed. Also, you offer VOPI too, and I like the principle behind contributing in order to get service. I may well do that.
Is my understanding correct that one may need multiple numbers in order to take advantage of cheaper calling to some countries?
I am based in Japan and make/receive calls primarily within Japan and to the US.
In Japan we have a fairly developed IP phone setup with providers like Yahoo (Softbank) and JCom cable TV. But they are still pricier than using various SIP services. But I am moving house in a few weeks and will not contract with a phone company as I want to be a pioneer with VoIP. I have mobile for emergencies, so am not worried about that.
Speaking of IP, when I went to Akihabara, the huge electronics section of Tokyo. I could not find any shops selling IP phones. I saw a lot of USB handsets, mostly marketed for SKYPE. I finally found one shop which specializes in non consumer stuff. When I asked, they directed mt to the correct floor, but when I asked the salesman, he asked me which provider and I said "various". He assumed I wanted to use a local company and when I said I wanted a Gradstream or similar, he refused to serve me, saying they could not gauarantee a specific hardware device would work with a given provider.
I got the feeling that they are avoiding selling to the public, perhaps to protect the local companies, with whom they may be in a partnership with (broadband is big here, and significantly faster than the US, for example, though even Korea is faster).
Whatever, I located the Grandstream distributor and now am looking forward to making use of the technology.
Thanks again for the great help.
