I'm a bit new to VoIP, so here's what I need:

There's a program called Twinkle that I'd like to use with my computer to act as a phone. My office in the US has a PBXtra and I can configure a profile to use their VoIP system. What I'd like to do is have another profile with a different service provider for personal calls. I don't want to run any extra software or hardware; just put in the configuration details and let it fly.

I travel a lot, namely within the US, Hispaniola, and Europe, so it would be nice if the configuration worked in those places and the provider had decent rates as well.

What is the best solution in this case?

Welcome to Voipuser.

My suggestion would be to take a look at Xlite as even the free version will allow you to monitor two separate lines and make outbound calls from either. (The paid version gives more lines).

If you need extra facilities like IM or Vide within the same client then you may be interested in taking a look at Bria from the same company.

More info on both here ...

I agree with gray. I have used/tested a variety of clients and I still prefer X-Lite (Linux version 2 - no video) and I have used the new Windows version. The older version 2 (no video) allows more providers to be registered at the same time than the new version.

Hi,

This post wasn't about clients; it was about SIP providers that I can use independent of the client. Can someone please point me in the direction of the point of the original post.

Thanks.

Most SIP providers can be used with a client of your choice. The one(s) you choose will depend on what you use them for and how much you use then. You might not even need a provider as you may be able to make IP to IP calls. For lots of short calls a provider that times by the second may be best (eg. mywebcalls). For long conversations then a different carrier may be best. Since PBxtra supports voip you should be able to connect directly using but calling something like extension [!at] pbxra.xxx.com (replace the [!at] with a @) or you could register with FWD or voxalot and use them to connect.

I'm looking for a provider that I can use independently of the PBXtra configuration, as if it didn't exist. So, in this case: need to not be bound to proprietary client, good rates, supported wherever I'm traveling to/from, what is the best provider? Thanks for the responses.

As I said, what is the best provider depends on your needs and your needs are different to mine. Is your company registered with ENUM? If that is the case then you can use Sip Broker or Voxalot to call free. The cost of voip calls is very low (you can get 1 cent/minute to the US and Canada). For the calls I make I use/have recently used Wengophone, mywebcalls, Vbuzzer and Sipdiscount. I certainly cannot say which if any is the best provider or the worst.

My needs were detailed in the original post. Wengophone was the highest on my list, but I'm not sure if they're registered with ENUM or if I'm able to use their SIP services without using their client.

Suggest you contact them and ask those two questions. There are literally hundreds of thousands of providers out there and to ask here for suggestions is always a mistake as it results in a 'spamfest'. You would do better to draw up a shortlist of half a dozen and then ask them all whether they can provide the facilities you want. If you look in the sticky posts at the top of this forum section you will find some lists with some suggestions.
