I did an update and now everytime it restarts or if I do a factory reset it goes to the upgrading screen gets and ip address and just sits there...

If I watch my tftp server it doesnt get any requests from the phone..

Does anyone have any ideas?

I really need to get this fixed...

I don't have a 7970 so the following is based on a 7960 running SIP (directions for Skinny are very similar though) You need to actually tell your phone where it will find the TFTP server -

First go to Settings » Unlock Config and enter the password (default is 'CISCO')

Then go to Settings » Network Configuration » TFTP Server which is line 7 of that menu.

Enter the server address digit by digit using the keypad not forgetting the dots!

Save the new settings and re boot the phone using '*' '6' and 'settings' buttons simultaneously. Make sure the TFTP server is running on the local machine

But all it does is go to that screen... So how do I get to the settings?

It was skinny... I updated to SIP 8.0.3... I just did it to my third phone and it works fine... So I know my firmware is good...

But the two phones I did before didn't work...

Just stops at the "Upgrading" screen with the cisco logo and doesn't do anything...

Therein lies the problem - the 7970 does not natively support SIP (yet). It can be forced to do so if you have lots of patience and enjoy a challenge.

These posts and others (if you do a search) have further info

Is there a way to reload the skinny firmware? I just need to get it out of this "uploading" state so I can reload the old firmware...

Anything I can do via SSH or the RS232 port?

A quick PM to Shippyt may be the answer, he posted this in the thread I suggested you read

1) Have tftpd32 running as both tftp and dhcp server

2) boot the phone and hold down the # key until the buttons cycle orange

3) press 3 4 6 1 6 7 2 8 5 0 * #

4) light the blue touch paper and stand well back

5) the phone will donwload the image from the tftp server and then the screen will go black for about 5 minutes before rebooting (interfering here may really brick your phone)

6) make sure the image has been uploaded by checking the tftp logs

7) voila!

Hello,

I have the same problem: stuck on the upgrading screen with the Cisco logo.

I have upgraded the phone succesfully to 8.3.1 firmware, but this firmware didn't register to my Lancom Voip router.

Thats why I tried to downgrade to the 8.0.3 firmware, because I read that this is working fine.

The firmware was loaded well from the tftp-server, but now I have the problem of the upgrading screen.

I tried already to restart the phone by pressing # and 1234567890*#, but this results in the same screen after starting up.

I see the phone is getting an IP-adress, but is not getting any files from the tftp-server again.

Step 3) in the previous awnser isn't working for me, becaus after 3 digits the phone doesn't restart but displays the upgrading screen.

Is there a possibility to enter the phone by ssh (what is the username and password?) to reset it or to correct the problem?

Thanks for helping out.

Frank,
Follow the instructions above to reset the firmware but change one thing...

Step 3 should be the following:
3) press 3491672850*#

Make sure you have your firmware files on the tftp server and that you have a dhcp server that is telling the phone what the tftp server's address is.

Your phone will go black for a little while and it is completely normal. DO NOT UNPLUG IT. Just wait it out. Otherwise you will ruin the phone...

Let me know if you have any questions before you try it.

Thanks very much for your help. I'm back on the line again.

My phone works again and can load any firmware I want for the 7970.

Except that I didn't find a working combination for my 7970 and Lancom voip-router...

More testing and reading this forum maybe will help me.

I am still having trouble with my 7970. It originally came with cisco OS and I wanted to change to SIP. I followed steps others are using but mine downloads 4 files and quits. It never finishes the firmware downloads. Then I tried the procedure in this thread. It downloads the first JAR file and then stops. Log shows

ERROR 10054 in system call recv An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

It stops there and disconnects. It connects again to DHCP and downloads the same file and repeats this procedure over and over and over. I tried the key sequence to erase firmware and restart but I get same results. Any suggestions?

I don't think you have the full 'SIP image', it should be bigger than that. The updates are four files but you are missing the rest. I have sent you a PM

I have all the files but it still downloads only the first 4 and stops in the middle of the 4th one.
