The n800 is turning more and more into a multi protocol mobile communication device.
Having had GoogleTalk from the beginning, then Gizmo project bringing out their GizmoClient to the device and now the device will support SIP directly without 3rd party clients with it's new rtcomm package set.
For those of you who have an N800, with nokia stopping support of their Internet Call software, there was a gap for video calling with the device which will now be filled by this new package.
I did a quick echotest call on VoIP User last night and that worked nicely.
The client is based on the
telepathy framework and also supports Presence/IM over SIP using the SIMPLE extension set.
Allthough not in production yet, the software can easily be installed via its installer available here:
http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org/
At your own risk of course, don't say i didn't warn you (backup first).
Video for now only works between 2 N800's so feel free to give me a call on VoIP user with an N800 to give it a try.
All in all great to see the maemo / nokia n800 platform is moving into full portable internet calling device with both open standard SIP and closed source Skype now available for the device.

The n800 is one of those simple tools that has the capability of changing the way that people use mobile devices. I can see the next generation getting a little smaller and having GPRS/3G capabilities.
Linux, with its huge back catalogue of open-source applications is the perfect platform for mobility.
